The New York City Department of Sanitation’s SAFE Disposal Events program provides a way for NYC residents to dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste. These events are held throughout the year in all five boroughs. The next SAFE Disposal Event in the Bronx will be on October 26th, 2024 from 10am to 4pm at the Orchard Beach Parking lot.
Residents can bring a variety of items to SAFE Disposal Events, including:
- Automotive products (antifreeze, car batteries, motor oil)
- Electronics (computers, monitors, televisions)
- Household products (flammable liquids, paint, paint thinners, pesticides)
- Medical waste (expired medications, sharps)
Items that are not accepted at SAFE Disposal Events include:
- Radioactive materials
- Explosives
- Infectious waste
- Business waste
- Plug-in appliances (microwaves, vacuum cleaners, box fans) or ones containing CFCs.
To participate in a SAFE Disposal Event, residents must bring proof of residency and be prepared to follow specific handling instructions for the items they wish to dispose of. Collected materials are either recycled, blended for fuel, or sent to licensed hazardous waste treatment facilities.
