If you own rental property in New York City, you may be required to register it with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). But not every building needs to be registered. Here’s a simple breakdown.

Building Type HPD Registration Required?
1–2 family home, owner lives there ❌ No
1–2 family home, owner does not live there ✅ Yes
3+ residential units (any ownership situation) ✅ Yes
Co-op or condo unit rented out (non-owner-occupied) ✅ Yes

🧾 What You Need to Know

  • Annual Registration Fee: $13 per unit

  • Due: Every year between May 21 and September 1

  • Where: Register through HPD Online

  • Update Info: Must update if there are changes in ownership, managing agent, or contact info

  • You can be fined
